In our instant and viral world, where we expect things to happen right away and seemingly with very little effort, we sometimes may not fully appreciate the effort behind some of the things that we take for granted. Further, it is easy to accept without question the person who seems to be an ‘overnight success’, and again, not fully appreciate the time he or she spent in the trenches – doing the work – before their big break.

In a similar vein, we tend to think the same way about happiness. Happiness just happens. A situation occurs and we are happy. Although these scenarios can occur, they tend to be few and far between. Moreover, we have all had experiences of getting something that we thought would make us happy and realizing that it didn’t. The chances of success are greater if we work to create our own happiness.

However, in order to create our own happiness it means that we know what would make us happy. Paradoxically, and although inherently we are all pursuing happiness, surprisingly few of us actually know what makes us truly happy.

Throughout the day, we invite you to revisit this quote. Below are a few questions you may wish to ask yourself, and those who journal may find them especially useful:

  • How would I define happiness for myself?
  • What makes me happy?
  • Am I prepared to do the work myself to be happy?
  • How much am I prepared to invest in my own happiness?

Best wishes, and have a great day!
