Being a strong and accomplished woman can a double-edged sword. People may respect your accomplishments, but at the same time, they can be intimidated by who you are, and so wish to undermine you and your efforts.
Moreover, and in being aware of these biases, many women proactively downplay themselves and what they have achieved, in the hope that they will be liked and will not be subject to the criticism of others. However, all that really does is lower their self-esteem and confidence, and suggest that they are really not proud of who they are.4
The key to overcoming this conundrum is self-love. The sobering truth is that people will criticise you regardless of who you are, what you do, and what you have achieved. However, you ought to know yourself and your truth, and be prepared to honour that in your interaction with others.
Throughout the day, we invite you to revisit this quote. Below are a few questions you may wish to ask yourself, and those who journal may find them especially useful:
- Am I confident enough to say to others, “This is who I am”?
- Who am I?
- How concerned am I about the criticism of others?
- What do I stand for?
Best wishes, and have a great day!
