There is a great temptation in life to remain with the familiar, because as humans, we are challenged by changes that introduce us to unfamiliar circumstances. We are prepared to hold on to the status quo – even though the situation might be unfulfilling or particularly challenging.

The painful fact, however, is that our empowerment only occurs when we are able to move away from our familiar routines and associations and face up to new and unfamiliar challenges. To be clear, empowerment is a proactive action that an individual makes. It is not something that others can do for us.

Hence, when we – proactively – can let go of the familiar, and are prepared to meet the unfamiliar, that is the true meaning of courage.
