Daily Inspiration, for 19 December 2022

As humans, and to some degree, we all crave stability. We get comfort from having a routine, and often, it develops without us having to give it a lot of thought. Routines can offer us a sense of calm in the chaos of our lives, as we know what we need to do and the order in which tasks need to be done.

However, at what point do we shift from having a routine to it being monotonous and being in a rut?

The thing about being in a rut is that can appear to have emerged all of sudden, but often it is a slow change that occurs when we relax into our routines, take situations and the people involved for granted, and limit our expectations of ourselves and others.  In other words, we can appear to have blinders on, find ourselves just going through the motions of life, and may even feel that we have painted ourselves into a corner and are trapped by the routine or situation we initially enjoyed.

This monotony can be soul-sapping, as it can narrow our horizons, stunt our creativity and joy for life, and ultimately, can be difficult to escape. The key though is vigilant, and the courage to not be complacent. Every so often, shake up the routine or whatever you have been the same way for days, weeks, months or even years. Very little of life is set in stone, and there is value in kicking the tyres and pushing the boundaries to find new ways and perspectives that can enrich your life.

Throughout the day, we invite you to revisit this quote. Below are a few questions you may wish to ask yourself, and those who journal may find them especially useful:

  • Is my life monotonous? Am I caught in a rut?
  • When was the last time I examined my routines?
  • Are my relationships in a rut? Am I taking loved ones for granted?

Best wishes and have a great day!!
