It is unlikely that any of us think of ourselves as a doormat. Very rarely would we accept being treated badly and not complain. Moreover, we most likely are familiar with someone whom we consider a doormat, and wonder why he or she puts up with such poor treatment.
However, when you consider that complaining or standing up for yourself is tantamount to rocking the boat, it may become apparent that in some instances, we are not as assertive as we think, and may even be seen as a doormat. For example, at work, you may have a boss or superior who is high-handed or does not have great people skills, and although you may be dying to put the person in their place, you do not for fear of the consequences.
Clearly, that is a difficult situation and the trade-offs ought to be carefully considered. However, it is also important to recognise and acknowledge the situations in which you are giving away your power, and so be better able to manage your own feelings and reactions.
More importantly, as today’s quote is reminding us, at any time we also have the power to change those situations: to take back our power and get off the floor.
Best wishes and have a great day!!
