As humans, we are social beings who thrive in the company of others. We have evolved over time with the knowledge that we are stronger and safer being part of a group.

Unfortunately, you will likely come to the realisation that no matter how hard you try, you will almost never fit in perfectly into the group to which you hope to belong. It is not about being right or wrong, or perfect or imperfect, it just is. And it is also likely that to varying degrees, everyone else in the group feels the same way.

The truth is that you – like everyone else – are unique, having different perceptions, experiences, skills and talents. And conforming to a mould to fit in, “like everyone else”, may mean that you cannot be your true self in all aspects of your life that matter.

To be your true self and achieve your fullest potential, you may have to go in a different direction from those in your circle. At times like this, you need to remind yourself and take comfort and courage from Desiderata that, “You are a child of the universe no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here.”
