It is amazing how much of our teenage years we spend agonizing over our level of popularity in the various groups to which we belong, as our main ambition was to be liked and have a lot of friends. But as we got older, we realized that it is much more difficult to be that person who is liked by everyone. Because in trying to achieve that feat, one has to be careful not to alienate the various people or factions with which we interact.
It also means we are not prepared to stand up for some defining principle because we will be at odds with those around us. More importantly, when we do so, we may be compromising ourselves – what we believe in, what we know to be right and what we ought to be standing up for – just to please others and avoid making a difficult decision.
It is thus good to remind ourselves that those individuals who make their mark in the world as change makers usually are passionate about the causes they believe in regardless of their popularity in the wider society. In your own circle, there is value in not compromising on important issues just to be liked.
Best wishes and have a great day!!
