It is difficult in this modern era of the ‘global village’ brought about by high media penetration, it can be especially difficult to maintain a strong sense of self when all around us are images of what is trending and how we should look to be considered ‘successful’. Huge advertising budgets are being spent to make us uncomfortable with how we are.
As women, we are particularly susceptible to all the messaging with which we are bombarded each day, and so show up in the world feeling that we are inadequate in the various spheres of our lives. In order to have the confidence of Katherine Johnson, the mathematician and first black woman at NASA, who was recently immortalised in the movie, Hidden Figures, we will have to unlearn some of the things we were told and ensure we inculcate in young women a strong sense of their own worth.
Throughout the day, we invite you to revisit this quote. Below are a few questions you may wish to ask yourself, and those who journal may find them especially useful:
- Do I feel inferior to others?
- Do I feel that I am better than others?
- How do I treat other women who are my colleagues or associates? Who are my friends? Who are family members?
Best wishes and have a great day!!
