This is a powerful statement, as we are reminded of the impact and implications of the commitments that we make. Sometimes we can commit to things absentmindedly, or to get someone off our back. But what we do when we make a commitment is that we tie ourselves into executing certain things, and to the people and the circumstances involved.
Another pivotal word in this quote attributed to Rick Warren, author of The Purpose Driven Life: What on Earth Am I Here For?, is the word “choose”. Again, we are reminded that we all have choice: the option to choose. However sometimes, the options are not particularly attractive, and of course, we choose the ones that work best for us under the circumstances. In almost all circumstances or situations, we have a choice, and so ought to consider the consequences carefully.
Moreover, when we say, “we didn’t have a choice”, generally, what we mean is that the options were difficult or were not ideal. But the difficulty of the choice ought not to be considered an excuse, or a means of absolving ourselves from the consequences. The consequences will come.
Throughout the day, we invite you to revisit this quote. Below are a few questions you may wish to ask yourself, and those who journal may find them especially useful:
- How aware am I of the choices I am making?
- To what degree am I comfortable with the consequences of my choices?
- Is there a recent situation in which I would say “I didn’t have a choice”?
- How prepared am I for the consequences of that difficult situation?
Best wishes, and have a great day!
