Daily Inspiration, for 19 September 2022

As women, we are often told that we teach other people how to treat us by the way we treat ourselves. However, girls and women have been, and continue to be, socialised to put others’ needs before our own. And if we do think of ourselves first, some members of our circle may consider us selfish, even though gender roles have been changing, and increasingly, women – like men – are expected to chart their own destinies.

Although it is difficult, we ought to keep in mind that our first responsibility in life is to ourselves. We must also constantly remind ourselves that we are not being selfish to consider our needs important. Because it is only when we are enjoying our best lives that we can truly be of service to others: for one is unable to share what one does not have.

Throughout the day, we invite you to revisit this quote. Below are a few questions you may wish to ask yourself, and those who journal may find them especially useful:

  • In what ways have I taught others to treat me?
  • Am I putting the needs of others before my own? And if yes, in what ways?
  • Under my current circumstances, how might I be able to ensure that (some of) my needs are met?

Best wishes and have a great day!
