If you research on Google what it is like to drive with your handbrake on, it stresses the damage that can be caused to braking components, which can lead to significant damage to the vehicle’s overall braking system. However, and from personal experience, should you drive with the handbrake on, from the start, you are likely to feel an inherent resistance and the vehicle not driving as fast or as responsive as it should.
It is a similar experience when you have low self-esteem. You cannot perform at your best. The simplest things require considerably more effort, as if you are trying to move in a vat of molasses. But unlike molasses, which is an external force, you are the one that is holding yourself back.
It is important to emphasise that when we speak of low self-esteem, we also include low self-confidence. Although they might seem like separate concepts, if your self-confidence is low, where you are constantly second-guessing yourself, your decisions or abilities, it is a form of low self-esteem.
Throughout the day, we invite you to revisit this quote. Below are a few questions you may wish to ask yourself, and those who journal may find them especially useful:
- Am I living my life with my handbrake on?
- Am I lacking in self-confidence or self-esteem?
Best wishes and have a great day!
