All too often, and if we allow it, we can find ourselves, and what we can and cannot do, defined by others. Sometimes the constraints placed on us are based on preconceived notions of who we are or on the biases of our community or circle.
These limitations can be based for example, on our gender (especially if we are female), race (particularly if we are people of colour), and if we are from a lower socio-economic bracket. More importantly, they all seek to get us to lower our horizons, limit our potential and not aspire to be our very best selves.
However, and as much as others can seek to limit us, it is crucial that we do not limit ourselves. It is easy when we have been exposed to the views and opinions of others about who they think we are and who they think we should be, that we begin to believe them, and so act in a way that makes those prejudices a reality.
The self-imposed prison can be the most difficult to overcome, and so we need to exercise constant vigilance to not listen to our detractors and to believe in ourselves when no one else does.
Throughout the day, we invite you to revisit this quote. Below are a few questions you may wish to ask yourself, and those who journal may find them especially useful:
- Have I allowed myself to be defined or confined by my environment or the views of others?
- In what ways have I allowed myself to be defined or confined by my environment or the views of others?
- How might I what I want for myself and my life differ from my environment or for those around me?
Best wishes and have a great day!
