Within society, and particularly with respect to people of colour, there is an assumption, and even an expectation, that a woman is supposed to be a superwoman. Although that term is almost never used, women are expected to perform all of their roles exceptionally well, and keep all the balls in the air, whilst the same is not necessarily expected of men.
It is thus unfortunate that so many of us women, without thinking, have gotten sucked into the notion that we HAVE to be superwoman, and so run ourselves ragged just trying to keep everything going. Sadly, what suffers the most is us, especially our mental, physical and emotional health, because we end up being out of balance, tired and just bone-weary.
To that end, it is crucial that we know when to say, “Stop. I need a break,” or “Stop, I need a few moments to myself.” It is important to take time regularly to replenish and rejuvenate, because as the saying goes, “You cannot pour from an empty cup.”
Throughout the day, we invite you to revisit this quote. Below are a few questions you may wish to ask yourself, and those who journal may find them especially useful:
- Do I feel that I have to be superwoman?
- Is that pressure to do it all only from my circle, or do I also put that pressure on myself?
- What do I do to replenish and restore balance in my life?
Best wishes, and have a great day!
