Daily Inspiration, for 26 November 2022

As women and/or Black, Indigenous, (and) People of Colour (BIPOC) individuals, we either have or have encountered ‘the glass ceiling’: this unacknowledged, but very much present, barrier to career advancement. However, in knowing that it exists, we have two options as to how we move forward.

First, we focus on the glass ceiling and all the challenges and limitations we could possibly experience.  In other words, we don’t even bother to do the work to advance, as we are of the view that the outcome is already a given, and so we inherently foster the glass ceiling mentality in ourselves.

Alternatively, we can focus on the work, our goals and what we are trying to achieve. Although the glass ceiling might indeed be there, in order to break that ceiling and be taken seriously, your performance needs to speak for itself.

Throughout the day, we invite you to revisit this quote. Below are a few questions you may wish to ask yourself, and those who journal may find them especially useful:

  • To what degree am I aware of the glass ceiling?
  • To what degree has my awareness of the glass ceiling affected my work and my attitude to work?
  • Have I been holding myself back because I don’t think I can break through the glass ceiling?
  • What would it take for me to just do the work without focusing on the glass ceiling?

Best wishes and have a great day!!
