Increasingly, and if you observe closely, we women are starting to look the same. The current style and fashion seem to require us to present ourselves a certain way – hair, make-up, physique, etc. – not only to be accepted but also to be considered pretty.

In some circles, it is argued that in today’s society, a woman’s value is being dictated by how attractive those around her think she is. Style, fashion and people’s opinions can be fickle and can change on a whim, but it does take considerable strength of character to stand in your own light and not be unduly swayed by the subconscious and not-so-subtle cues you may be receiving.

Also, it must be emphasised that prettiness is transient, as it tends to be used to describe girls and young women. There will come a point when your ‘prettiness’ will fade, or you will no longer compare favourably with the ‘prettier’ or much younger ones who are coming up. What then will you rely on as your calling card as female?

If you do not make prettiness a currency upon which you value yourself, you would have won a major battle that so many of us struggle with every day.
