The foundation of the chivalrous behaviour of men rests on the belief from medieval times that women were little more than overgrown children: who needed to be shepherded through the world by the men in their lives. In other words, women were not as smart as men and could not take care of themselves, their property or their finances.

This medieval attitude still lingers today. Therefore any woman who wants to be self-sufficient and independent must be prepared to challenge the existing power structure established by the patriarchy, as it is common knowledge that one does not relinquish power and influence without a fight.
