Disappointment can be a difficult pill to swallow, and of course, there are sayings such as, “Every cloud has a silver lining”, which people hope will lessen the pain. However, we can never be sure whether greater strife or heartache lies round the corner when a situation does not go the way we want.

As much as we might want to think that we have full control of our lives, that is not entirely true. There are numerous elements and forces at play in every situation we face – both seen and unseen. More importantly, we cannot predict how those forces will act in any given situation, which means that there are a multitude of outcomes that can occur. But we tend to latch onto just one of them.

When we focus only on the outcome we desire, disappointment can ensue, and we feel wronged. However, recognising that a multitude of forces are at play that we can’t control, it can be a liberating feeling. The only thing we have control over in any given situation is how we choose to act and conduct ourselves.

 

Throughout the day, we invite you to revisit this quote. Below are a few questions you may wish to ask yourself, and those who journal may find them especially useful:

• Do I find myself unduly disappointed when a situation does not turn out the way I had hoped?

• Think of a recent disappointment, what might be some of the blessings in that situation not working out the way I wanted?
