This is an interesting perspective because normally we use our careers to establish status, prestige and power, which then determines our level of success. Thus the trajectory of our career tends to be linear: rising from the bottom to the top of our chosen field.
However, that is an outdated view of careers and the workplace that is no longer the norm. Instead, it is being suggested that you view your career as a tool to build capacity, sharpen and diversify your skills expand your horizons and improve your competencies. As a result, the path may not be straight or predictable. At some points, it may even appear that we have taken a step back or have regressed, but if the focus is on acquiring new and different skills and experiences, then our efforts will not be in vain.
This approach to career development will alter the choices we make and will revolutionise how we view success and failure in our careers.
Throughout the day, we invite you to revisit this quote. Below are a few questions you may wish to ask yourself, and those who journal may find them especially useful:
- What are some of the career goals that I have set for myself?
- To what degree have I been reluctant to embrace work opportunities that would take me outside my comfort zone?
- What might be some of the opportunities that I should be prepared to embrace in order to put me in a better position to achieve my goals?
Best wishes and have a great day!
