Loneliness can be such a devastating emotion, and in some ways, a paradox. Many of us hope that our relationships, be they familial, with friends or with a romantic partner, would assuage our feelings of loneliness. However, although we may have friends, family or even a partner, there can still be a sense of loneliness, or of feeling alone, even when we are thronged by people.
As social creatures, we definitely need to feel connected to others. But that connection is often forged by the intimacy that can be established. To that end, and on our part, how authentic are we in our interactions?
There is also something to be said about being comfortable in one skin. If we are not careful, we can find ourselves trying to escape ourselves and our thoughts by always needing the distraction of people. However, in the inevitable quiet moments, we are left looking, squarely at ourselves and to varying degrees, feeling overwhelmed and alone.
Throughout the day, we invite you to revisit this quote. Below are a few questions you may wish to ask yourself, and those who journal may find them especially useful:
- When, or in what situations, is my sense of loneliness the strongest?
- When, or in what situations, is my sense of loneliness the weakest?
- How authentic am I in my interaction with others?
- Am I trying to escape myself?
- What can I do when I’m feeling alone or lonely?
Best wishes, and have a great day!
