Today’s quote is quite unusual and its advice or perspective is not one that we tend to think about.
In many of our circles and the societies in which we live, there is a marked emphasis on achievement, ranging from being able to get into good schools and universities to the profession we choose. It is thus no surprise that ‘achievement’ is a key metric we use to not only measure our success in life, but also how we value and define ourselves.
Even when we experience challenges and setbacks, they are often viewed through the lens of achievement: how well we can overcome them and go on to achieve ‘greatness’. As a result, the story of our life – that could indicate who we are – tends to focus on the highlights, such as the achievements and successes that we have had.
However, what Sheryl Sandberg is emphasising is the low points in our lives are just as important in telling the story of who we are, as we are not only defined by our successes, but also by our failures and the calamitous experiences we have had. These challenges are what show our mettle and our character, as well as our will to survive and overcome.
Thriving when fortune is smiling upon you is easy. How well you manage a devastating situation is entirely another matter.
Something to think about.
Best wishes and have a great day!!
