Although there may be a tendency for us to take comfort in being part of the pack, we also like to compare ourselves with others, in the hope we are better than them. Often, we aspire to have more: more money, more prestige, more noble, more charitable, etc., which can only be confirmed when we compare ourselves to others.
However, such comparisons are an illusion, as they really do not mean that you are superior to anyone else. Moreover, comparing yourself to others, and seeking to validate yourself – who you are, what you have, and by extension, your very existence – is not only unfortunate, but may also be a sign of low self-esteem.
Truly, the only race you should be in is with yourself. The only person you ought to be comparing yourself with is who you had been.
Throughout the day, we invite you to revisit this quote. Below are a few questions you may wish to ask yourself, and those who journal may find them especially useful:
- How much emphasis do I place on how I compare to others?
- How do I compare with who I was five, or even 10 years ago?
- Am I a better person than I was five, or even 10 years ago?
Best wishes and have a great day!!
