Daily Inspiration, for 7 May 2022

It is behaviour that we see time repeatedly in women. Whenever there is a decision to be made, they are more inclined to seek the approval – or at the very least, the consensus – of others. Although that characteristic tends to be lauded for being more inclusive and democratic, especially in the workplace, why does this behaviour also extend to women’s personal lives, and situations in which they are the primary actor?

To some degree, this need for approval suggests that we, women, are not confident in making decisions on our own. Having said this, many will argue that in seeking the opinion of others allows them to consider other sides of the issue that previously, had not come to mind. However, some of us depend on others to think through our challenges and help us make a decision.

In taking that approach, it suggests that a decision affecting your life may be unduly influenced but the experiences and prejudices of others upon whom you have relied. And so you may allow ourself to be diverted from paths that you ought to take, which may allow you to not only realise your full potential, but also open you to opportunities that you could never have envisaged.

Throughout the day, we invite you to revisit this quote. Below are a few questions you may wish to ask yourself, and those who journal may find them especially useful:

  • How comfortable am I about making decisions about my life, and doing so on my own?
  • To what degree do I depend on others when making a decision?
  • Am I depending on others to highlight sides of the issue I had not considered, or am I seeking guidance on the decision I should make?

Best wishes and have a great day!
